Necklace lengths

Necklace length is the full length of the chain, measured in inches (in) from end to end including the clasp. Where a necklace sits depends on your neck size, build and the size of any pendant.

All lengths in inches (in). 1 in = 2.54 cm.

Collar 14 in
Sits close around the middle of the neck on most adults.
Choker 16 in
Rests at the base of the neck.
Princess 18 in
Falls at or just below the collarbone. A popular length for solitaire pendants.
Matinee 20–24 in
Falls a few inches below the collarbone, toward the top of the chest.
Opera 28–36 in
Falls at or below the bust and can often be doubled around the neck.
Rope 36 in and longer
Long enough to wrap or knot in several ways.

Good to know

  • The placements above are approximate and vary from person to person.
  • To check, lay a string or a chain you own along your neck at the length you are considering and look in a mirror.
  • When layering, pieces about 2 inches apart in length tend to sit clearly separated.
